2013 Firefighter Appreciation Week in Colorado observed

August 10 – 17th

Denver, CO – July 9, 2013 – Firefighter Appreciation Week honors all firefighters who risk their lives battling fires in Colorado, especially those who recently battled the Black Forest fire, the largest in state history.  It was also created to provide an annual non-partisan platform to enable all residents of Colorado to say “thank you” to firefighters who work to keep them safe 365 days a year.

“We owe a tremendous amount of gratitude to firefighters throughout Colorado for their work fighting wildfires,” said Gov. John Hickenlooper, the honorary chairman of Firefighter Appreciation Week.  “We encourage every Coloradan to help us honor those who put their lives on the line to protect our communities.”

“Our firefighters and first responders have worked tirelessly to protect Colorado communities from the ongoing threats of wildfire and other emergencies.  Their bravery and commitment have saved untold lives and homes across the state,” Sen. Mark Udall said. “I want to urge every Coloradan to thank these heroes during Firefighter Appreciation Week and to remember their service throughout the year.”

"The bravery and selflessness of our firefighters has been on display in recent weeks as they’ve been working tirelessly to protect our communities," Sen. Mike Bennet said. "We owe all of our firefighters – urban, wildland, and volunteer – an enormous debt of gratitude. I hope all Coloradans will join me in sharing my sincere appreciation for these heroes this week."

Due to the professionalism and integrity of the Lyons Fire Department, Lyons has been selected as the city to kick-off the tribute week in Colorado.  Lyons Mayor Julie Van Domelen said:  “I’m proud that our dedicated firefighters have been recognized for the outstanding work they do to keep all of us safe.”  She went on; “Therefore, on behalf of the residents of Lyons, we welcome firefighters from around the state to join us on Saturday August 10th, so we can thank all of them for their service.”

Lyons Fire Department Chief, J.J. Hoffman, comments; “I want to thank the residents of Colorado for supporting firefighters during this extremely difficult fire season. My fellow firefighters and I believe it is a privilege to serve our community, so we are both honored and humbled at the outpouring of support, and look forward to meeting as many residents of Colorado as possible during the Fight Fire With Music, Beer & BBQ festival in Lyons on August 10th and the Fight Fire With Beer Festival at the 29th Street Mall in Boulder on August 17th.”

The tribute week kicks off at Oskar Blues in Lyons at noon with the Fight Fire With Music, Beer & BBQ.  The day long festival will include great local bands, craft brews and some of the best BBQ around.  The week will culminate with the Fight Fire With Beer Festival to be held Saturday August 17th at the 29th Street Mall in Boulder.  This family friendly event will begin at 4pm and go until 10:00pm.  Firefighters from around the state will be on-hand at both festivals to meet residents of Colorado who want to thank them for their service.

At the festival, the highlight of the evening is the awarding of the Fight Fire With Beer – Governor’s Cup winners.  Breweries from around the state enter this official competition and the breweries that win the coveted awards have the honor of creating the “Official” brew of the Fight Fire With Beer Festival, which will be featured in bars, restaurants, and made available for retail sale the entire year.  A portion of sales will benefit firefighters across the state.

Stating that “Our firefighters are always there for us.” Olympic Marathon Champion Frank Shorter will once again Chair the Fight Fire With Running challenge.  “We’re excited to build upon the success of last years race to offer a great 5K, run in association with Color Me Rad at the Denver Botanical Garden’s on August 17th.” said festival Executive Producer Anders Mavis.

Another featured event created to support firefighters is the Fight Fire With Bikers special event created in collaboration with Denver Bike Night and cyclists across the state of Colorado.  For information on the bike route and featured bars along the way, please visit the official website.

“Not only is it important for those who serve to understand how much they are appreciated by the very people they protect,” said festival creator David Clark.  “but also for the families of firefighters who support and sustain them to know we appreciate their sacrifice as well.”

“In addition to paying tribute to firefighters across the state of Colorado via Firefighter Appreciation Week and the Fight Fire With Beer Festival,” states festival organizer Derek Stuerman of U Cause Events, “Proceeds will be donated to meet the material needs of firefighters across the state, and to educate the public about fire safety so the impact of future fires is minimized.”
